2. Weather-appropriate clothing

We don't need to advise you - we're sure you've already got the right fabric.

3. A GPS cardio watch so you don't get lost

The choice of your trail vest (or hydration jacket) is very important. It needs to hold all your trail gear without getting in the way during the competition.

4. Trail vest (or hydration jacket)

The choice of your trail vest (or hydration jacket) is very important. It needs to hold all your trail gear without getting in the way during the competition.

Choose a volume suited to your distance and the equipment you're carrying. It's generally between 2L for short-distance trails and 10L to 15L for long-distance and ultra-trail.

Numerous pockets let you access your gear without having to stop running. A zipped pocket secures your keys or papers.

5. Bring your own water

We generally use soft flasks on the shoulder straps. No need to take them out to drink when you're running, and no need to remove the bag at refuelling points.

It's also possible to use a water pouch on the back or a simple water-bottle holder for short-distance participants.

Water or isotonic energy drink? Get your bearings during training and keep them once you're racing.

6. Trail food

You'll probably need to eat during your run. Take a few energy bars or gels in accessible pockets as you run.

Here too, test the food during your training sessions to make sure you can handle the taste and digest it well on race day.

It's hard to eat when you're running, especially with a bib at a high pace. So train yourself to eat while you run, so you can eat well while running.

7. Headlamp

A headlamp is necessary for early morning starts or if you're likely to cross the finish line in the evening. Essential for a night trail, it is not necessary to take it for all races.

Whether you're training or racing in the mountains, we recommend that you always keep it at the bottom of your pack for safety's sake.

8. Survival blanket

Whatever your race format, a survival blanket is a must in your backpack. It can protect you from the cold (or heat) if you have to stop.

Very lightweight, it's a safety feature that we think you should always have at the bottom of your bag.

9. Cell phone trail

There's usually a cell phone pocket on your trail bag. It's good to have easy access to it in case of emergency... or to take pictures of the scenery (or in front of the Eiffel Tower) ;)

If your cell phone isn't waterproof, remember to protect it in a plastic bag or pouch. Some runners use a waterproof armband.

10. The jacket

Take along a windproof jacket in case of bad weather. You can adapt it to the weather: minimalist, very light and breathable or very waterproof. Soft-shell jackets can also provide warmth in cold weather.

Put your jacket over your bag without stopping to run.

Conclusion

A list of compulsory equipment has been drawn up for all race formats. So be sure to check the EcoTrail Paris website and make your checklist accordingly. Define the right equipment for you in training and concentrate solely on the race on the day of your trail run. As Casquette Verte advises, don't hesitate to check the weather forecast several days beforehand to adapt your checklist.
