Trail running in Paris
Taking up trail running? You can now start your training in the heart of Paris. And Casquette Verte won't tell you otherwise. With few elevation changes and little autonomy to manage, these trails are ideal for a smooth transition from running to trail running. An easy way to get some fresh air if you're nearby and don't have much time for your training session.
Bois de Vincennes
- Area: East Paris, 12th arrondissement
- Access: Metro 1 - Château de Vincennes
- Type of terrain: easy, wooded path, sometimes muddy
- Places of interest: Château de Vincennes, Parc Floral de Paris, Hippodrome, Arboretum, Lac de Gravelle, Butte Aux Canons
With its 995 hectares, the Bois de Vicennes is the largest green space in Paris. A training ground for Casquette Verte, the Bois de Vincennes is permanently open and brimming with natural and historical sights. A Paris classic well worth a few sessions of trail running with no great technical difficulties.
Domaine national de St-Cloud
- Area: West of Paris, St-Cloud
- Access: Metro 9 - Pont de Sèvres or Tram T2 - Musée de Sèvres
- Type of terrain: slightly technical path, possibility of gradients
- Places of interest: Rond de la Balustrade, Parc de St-Cloud farm, Trocadéro garden
It's no coincidence that the EcoTrail Paris uses the paths of the Domaine national de St-Cloud. Even though you'll have to do a series of loops to make up the distance within the park, the terrain is a little more technical than in the middle of Paris, and offers a great base for progressing your trail running. A few roots may appear on the sometimes greasy ground, so start looking where you're putting your feet.
Trail routes near Paris
As you move away from Paris, the parks give way to the forest and the range of possibilities increases tenfold. Longer outings are possible, and the paths can become technical in a hilly setting conducive to small gradients.
Forêt Domaniale de Meudon
- Area: Meudon, Chaville, South-West Paris
- Access: Transiliens L, U and N or RER C
- Type of terrain: undulating woodland track
- Curiosities: Paris Observatory in Meudon, Meudon ponds and megaliths
Welcome to the largest forest in the Hauts-de-Seine region. The forest paths, some of them steep, also offer excellent terrain for trail running. And if we tell you that it's possible to connect the Forêt Domaniale de Meudon with those of Fausses Reposes and Clamart, you'll understand that you'll need a few trail outings to scour the area.
Saint-Nom-la-Bretèche, Forêt de Marly
- Area: West of Paris, Marly-le-Roi
- Access : Transilien L
- Type of terrain: forest course
- Curiosities: St-Michel cross, remains of the Château de Retz
An area accessible by train to the west of Paris. A natural setting in the middle of the forest, with beautiful views. A rather "rolling" sector, but a few bumps will give you a chance to work on your technique.
The Chevreuse Valley
- Area: Southwest of Paris, Parc Naturel Régional de la Haute Vallée de Chevreuse
- Access: RER B - Gures-sur-Yvette
- Type of terrain: less technical trails
- Attractions: trail station, wide range of itineraries
The Vallée de Chevreuse offers a trail station starting from Bures-sur-Yvette, with several well-marked routes just 40 minutes from Paris by RER B. There are numerous possibilities for varied itineraries between lakes, forest and fields. There's plenty of scope to extend the distance on a topography that remains accessible in terms of altitude difference.
